Sea Glass Hunting

One of our favorite ways to spend time together is sea glass hunting with the kids. It’s slow. It’s quiet. And it asks something of you: patience.

The more patient you are, the more treasures you find. Not just the colorful, frosted pieces of glass scattered along the shoreline, but little lessons in being present. In waiting. In noticing.

There’s a small thrill when a piece catches your eye—how it sparkles in the sun or fits perfectly in your hand. And then comes the tiny debate: is it worth keeping? Is it a rock? Sea glass? Or just not ready yet? My kids love this part. I love it too. It’s a small way to practice discernment, to slow down, to savor the tiny victories.

Why I love sea glass hunting with kids:

  • It’s a chance to disconnect from the chaos, even for a little while.

  • Walking the shoreline feels like a gentle reminder to slow down and breathe.

  • The hunt itself teaches patience—and sometimes, quiet wonder.

  • And yes, by the end of a few hours, everyone is ready for night-night, but the memories linger.

There’s something quiet and comforting about walking the sand with small hands in yours, scanning the waves and the pebbles. You might find a piece of glass, sure—but you’ll also find the calm that comes from slowing down. The small joy of noticing. The magic of just being together.

As you hunt for treasures, it’s also a gentle reminder to protect the beaches we love. Picking up a stray piece of trash along the way or learning more about ocean conservation can make your family adventure even more meaningful. You can find tips and ways to get involved with beach cleanups at Ocean Conservancy.

So, next time you find yourself near the shore, bring a jar, take a deep breath, and look a little closer. Among the sands and surf, you might find something unexpected.
